How do I install HIP Desktop on a Mac?
⚠️ Mac Users: Before downloading the installer, check your Mac's processor type (Apple Silicon or Intel) by going to the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac." Download the correct installer for your processor type to avoid compatibility issues.
To install HIP Desktop on a Mac, follow these steps:
Double-click the downloaded installer file from your Downloads folder.
If a pop-up appears saying the file could not be opened, do not try to open the file again from the same prompt. Instead:
Click the Apple icon in the top-left corner and open System Settings.
Click Privacy & Security.
Scroll down to find the Open Anyway button next to the HIP installer and click it.
A second confirmation box will appear — click Open Anyway again.
Enter your Mac password when prompted to continue.
Click Next, then click I Agree on the License Agreement screen.
Click Install.
When prompted, click Allow to grant HIP access to your Documents folder — this is required for the application to run correctly.
Once installation is complete, click Finish. Note: Before starting the installation, ensure you have downloaded the correct installer for your Mac's processor type (Apple Silicon or Intel). If you are unsure, go to the Apple menu and select "About This Mac" to check your processor type.
Why am I getting a "Cannot Open File for Writing" error?
A "Cannot Open File for Writing" error during installation almost always means HIP Desktop is still running in the background. Close HIP completely before running the installer and then try again.
Why does Windows say it can't install HIP because of S Mode?
Windows S Mode restricts installations to apps from the Microsoft Store only. To install HIP Desktop, you will need to switch your PC out of S Mode first. Follow the steps in Switching a Windows PC out of S Mode.
I can't find HIP Desktop after installing it on my Mac — where is it?
Why won't the HIP installer open on my Mac? If the HIP installer does not open, verify that you have downloaded the correct version for your Mac's processor type. The Apple Silicon installer will not run on Intel-based Macs. Check your processor type by going to the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac," then download the appropriate installer.
After installing HIP Desktop on a Mac, the HIP icon will appear in the Applications folder in your Finder. Open it from there the first time, and you can then right-click the icon in your Dock to keep it there, or drag it to your Desktop for easier access.
Will my templates and settings be preserved when I update HIP? Yes, when you install updates to HIP Desktop, including the Apple Silicon version, your templates, settings, and existing work are preserved. You do not need to manually back up your data before updating.
