HIP File Types: What They Are and Where to Find Them

Home Inspector Pro (HIP) uses several proprietary file types to store inspections, templates, and design files. This article explains what each HIP file type is and where to find them on your computer by default.

What is an .hzf file?

An .hzf file is your editable Home Inspector Pro inspection file. It contains all inspection data — including notes and photos — used to create your report, and is used with HIP Desktop software. If you are looking for a saved inspection to edit or reopen, you are looking for an .hzf file.

Common HIP file types

Home Inspector Pro uses the following file extensions:

  • .hzf — Your editable inspection file. Contains all inspection data (notes, photos, etc.) used to generate your report. Used with HIP Desktop software.

  • .tpz — A template file used when creating inspections in HIP Desktop and HIP Mobile.

  • .tpzx — A template bundle file. Template bundles are used for sharing a .tpz template along with all related files associated with it.

  • .hdzi — A Cover Page Design file. Used to save a custom cover page, which can then be loaded onto another template or transferred to a separate computer running HIP.

Where are HIP files stored on my computer?

By default, HIP files are stored locally on your computer. The default file locations are listed below.

Note: If you changed the default installation path when installing Home Inspector Pro, your file locations will be different from those listed here.

File type

Default location

.hzf

C:\Program Files (x86)\Home Inspector Pro\Client Data

.tpz

C:\Program Files (x86)\Home Inspector Pro\Data

.tpzx

C:\Program Files (x86)\Home Inspector Pro\Data\TemplateDistribution

.hdzi

C:\Program Files (x86)\Home Inspector Pro\Cover Page Designs

Can't find your file?

If you cannot locate your HIP file in the default folder, here are the most common reasons:

  • You changed the installation path — if you chose a custom install location when setting up HIP, your files will be in that location instead.

  • The file was saved to a different folder — check your Documents folder or any folder you may have manually saved to.

  • You are on a different computer — HIP files are stored locally by default and will not appear on another machine unless they have been transferred or synced.
